ReDefine Centre Stage – Interview with Jouelle Baracho

Get ready to give a standing ovation for our new profile series, ReDefine Centre Stage! In this series, we’ll be shining a light on the spectacular individuals who work across our global studios. Every two weeks, a different team member will take the stage to share their experiences, insights and advice. Today we are chatting with Jouelle Baracho, Senior Creative Supervisor at our Mumbai studio.

1. How did you get your start in Lighting? What inspired you to choose VFX as a career?

I was always fascinated by the intersection of art and technology, and VFX provided the perfect platform to explore this synergy. I initially started as a CG Lead, but my passion for storytelling and creating immersive visual experiences led me to excel in a career in VFX. The ability to bring imagination to life and transport audiences to new worlds through visual effects truly captivated me.

2. What’s the best thing about being a Lighting TD?

As a Senior Creative Supervisor, I love having the opportunity to lead and collaborate with incredibly talented individuals. I get to be a part of the entire creative process, from conceptualization to execution, and guide a team towards achieving a unified artistic vision. Being able to inspire and mentor fellow artists while pushing the boundaries of creativity is truly rewarding.

3. Tell us about a career highlight!

One of the most memorable career highlights for me was when our team at ReDefine Mumbai received recognition for our work on Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva. The project presented unique challenges, but through our collective efforts and innovative approach, we were able to deliver breathtaking visual effects that garnered critical acclaim. It was a testament to the dedication and talent of the entire team and reinforced our position as industry leaders in VFX. I can proudly say that we have successfully ReDefined Indian VFX to the global standards.

4. Advice for anyone wanting to become a Lighting TD?

To aspiring Senior Creative Supervisors, I would emphasize the importance of honing your technical skills and staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field. However, it’s equally crucial to develop strong leadership qualities, effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams. Additionally, never stop exploring your creativity and pushing boundaries. Embrace challenges, seek mentorship, and constantly strive for personal and professional growth.

5. What is your favourite movie?

It’s difficult to choose just one, but if I had to pick, I would say John Wick & Avatar. The film’s visionary action sequences, world-building and seamless integration of visual effects continue to inspire me to this

6. What about your dream project?

My dream project is to create a visually stunning and immersive feature film using CG and animation. I want to push storytelling boundaries, captivate audiences, and spark wonder with vibrant visuals and meticulous attention to detail.

7. What ReDefine studio would you like to work in for a day?

While I’m incredibly proud of our work at ReDefine Mumbai, I would love to experience the vibrant energy and creative atmosphere of ReDefine Vancouver or ReDefine Montreal. Collaborating with artists from different cultural backgrounds and exploring new perspectives would be an enriching experience.

8. Finally, what are 3 words you would use to describe ReDefine?

Ambitious, innovative and passionate.

ReDefine is definitely a great place to be. I have enjoyed every single day here, the work is truly rewarding. The teams share a great bond and that’s what makes it a great place to work.
